Edward H. Johnson put the very first string of electric Christmas tree lights together in 1882. Johnson, Edison's friend and partner in the Edison's Illumination Company, hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs and wound them around his Christmas tree.

The people who did have electricity, and were wealthy, would pay as much as $300 for an electrician to light their tree with these electric lights. The price was high at this time because the bulbs on the trees did not have screw-in sockets yet, so someone had to individually wire each bulb on the string of lights.

Edward Johnson electrified the first Christmas tree with lights in 1882. In 1890, Edison sold the light bulb to General Electric (GE), which commercialized the Christmas light. These first bulbs were heavy and bulky and had to be individually attached to a wire on the tree. Only eight bulbs could be attached to a wire.
