Guitar pickups are among the most important parts of the guitar. Without pickups, no one would be able to hear what you play. The pickup will register disturbance in the magnetic field and create a small current that will further get amplified until we can hear it from the speaker. But do electric guitar pickups really make a difference?

These create a magnetic field focused on individual pole pieces that are approximately centered under each string on the electric guitar. Since most guitars have six strings, most pickups contain six pole pieces. The spacing, alignment, and power of these individual pole pieces affects the sound the pickup will produce.

On active pickups you can also boost frequencies (like treble, bass, or both) from your instrument, a feature that's commonly available on most acoustic-electric guitars. On electric guitars, active pickups are generally only used for genres that require high levels of distortion, like metal and hard rock.

With piezo pickups, the electric signal is preamplified before it reaches the guitar’s output. Tone-wise, electric guitars with piezo pickups produce a less warm but brighter tone compared to magnetic pickups and this allows for a high degree of tone clarity and string articulation.

Active pickups rely on a battery and can deliver sounds at a greater output, thus providing consistency and power to your guitar sound. Passive pickups have copper wire and a magnet that sense string vibrations. These vibrations translate into currents that get fed out of your amp.

The difference in pickups has to do with the different ways the magnets inside them direct the sound waves they amplify from the strings. What are single coil pickups? This is one reason for the difference in tone between heavier strings and lighter strings. Similarly, if we increase the strength of the pickup’s magnetic field, all other things remaining equal, we’ll get a higher voltage.
