I did all the framing and finishing work myself but hired the shop to run the gas line & roof venting and install the unit. One of the great things about doing a DIY gas fireplace is that you can do as much or as little yourself as you want.

Fireplace Framing & Electrical Rough-in. Well, one of the things I've learned is that pictures of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical rough-ins aren't very exciting ;-) It's been a few days since it was worth taking a picture. I am happy to report that the white accent framing around all of the exterior windows and doors has been completed.

For $650 more, our fireplace dealer would have installed the fireplace, not including the gas and electric hookups or any interior finishing. The materials for the wood framing, drywall and stucco coating cost an additional $175. Hire a plumber to run the gas line during the framing process and connect it to the fireplace ($250 to $500).

Framing is 16" o.c. and this is not a little dog house, but full height walls with a little gable at the top. While my original plan was to cut a piece of that middle stud out and just put in minimal 2x4 structure for anchoring the vent termination to, I suspect I will need to put in a twinn 2x6 header, trimmer studs, sill, and cripple studs.
