It’s often called methane-dominant SIBO, methane overgrowth, or IBS with constipation (IBS-C). The one thing we now know is that people with IBS who have an overgrowth of methane or who show a high amount of methane production on the SIBO breath test can be categorized differently than people with diarrhea who usually show more of the gases hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide.

Methane Dominant SIBO- Standard Treatment (Prescription Drugs) Standard treatment includes dietary changes and antibiotics. You may receive a low FODMAP diet handout like this along with the prescription for antibiotics. Laxatives are also recommended for sibo constipation relief. .

Hydrogen Dominant SIBO. The focus of this post is not on Hydrogen dominant SIBO, but I want to at least briefly describe it. I like to think of SIBO in two “phases.” The first phase is Hydrogen. The second phase is Methane. SIBO presents itself when there is too much bacteria in the small intestine.

1. Diet for Methane SIBO. Diet is helpful for two reasons. First, the right diet can help to reduce symptoms in the short-term and lay the foundation for healing. Second, restricting the food supply to the bacteria and archaea responsible for excess gas production is an important part of the methane SIBO treatment process.

After clearing methane, a a SIBO retest must be done. The SIBO diet must be followed up to 2 to 3 months after clearing it to prevent relapse. For vegetarians, soy can help address a methane overgrowth. I don’t suggest soy for meat eaters but vegetarians should try sprouted tempeh, as this can help reduce methane. The bi phasic diet has a lot of vegetarian substitutions for those who don’t eat meat.

Doctors generally recommend eating a well-balanced diet and taking smaller meals in SIBO. An elemental diet, which involves consuming pre-digested nutrients, can also be very helpful for SIBO. For specific dietary advice for methane SIBO, it’s best to consult a doctor.
