For our purposes, we can consider it to be methane. By molecular weight, methane is 16.04/2.016 = 7.956 times as heavy and therefore as dense as hydrogen (at the same temperature and pressure). That is, hydrogen takes up about eight times as much volume as methane for the same amount of mass.

Methane is a colorless, odorless, and flammable greenhouse gas, while Natural gas is primarily methane but contains ethane, propane, carbon dioxide, and water vapor as well. Is natural gas same as gasoline? While natural gas is composed of mainly methane (which is made from a majority of hydrogen), gasoline is composed of carbon compounds.

Methane consists of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. For normal combustion, the residual products are H2O (water vapour) and CO2 (carbon dioxide). Hydrogen gas (H2) consists of two hydrogen atoms.

The latest estimate for the GWP of hydrogen is 4.3, with a 95% confidence range of 0 – 9.8. For comparison, methane is estimated to have a GWP of 28–36 over the same 100 year time horizon, so hydrogen is probably about 7 times weaker than methane as a greenhouse gas. How important is that?

Hydrogen fuel can be produced from methane or by electrolysis of water. As of 2020, the majority of hydrogen (∼95%) is produced from fossil fuels by steam reforming or partial oxidation of methane and coal gasification with only a small quantity by other routes such as biomass gasification or electrolysis of water.

Biomethane and hydrogen are two sides of the same coin, both have the potential to decarbonise the gas supply and the former can be used to produce the latter. One last thing to consider is that biomethane is generated by recycling organic wastes.
