Thermocouple connections should be hand tight plu1/4 turn. Clean thermocouple ends with Emery cloth or an abrasive sponge. DO NOT USE A METAL FILE.Replace if damaged. Using a multimeter, insert adapter between valve and thermocouple, if the readings are less than 2 TO 6 mV DC, replace thermocouple. SEE PAGE 6 FIGURE 8.

Turn off the fireplace gas valve and remove the front panel from the fireplace. Some panels have a screw on each side that needs to be removed and other panels lower on a hinge. Step 2 Find the thermocouple, which is located next to the pilot light and looks like a small straight pipe.

So, a thermocouple is an important device in the functioning of a fireplace. If it stops working, then the fireplace also shuts up. However, it is easy to replace a gas fireplace thermocouple with a wrench tool. But, it is advisable to test your thermocouple once, before replacement.

Put the thermocouple on a surface that will not burn (just in case). Clean the screw terminals. Insert the two wires of the new thermocouple and tighten the screws. Turn on the gas and re-light the pilot light.

Turn the gas off to your fireplace entirely and make sure to give the thermocouple about half an hour to cool off before trying to handle it. Take a hex nut driver or screwdriver and loosen the objects holding the two thermocouple wires in place. Some models will use hex nuts while others will simply install screws.

Turn off the gas supply. Unfasten the three nuts that hold the thermocouple and the two gas tubes to the valve. Detach the thermocouple from the burner. Install the new one the same way that you removed the old one.

The only tool you need to replace a thermocouple is a wrench. Use it to unscrew the connector that holds the thermocouple to the gas valve, then unhook the probe from its clip and pull out the entire thermocouple assembly. Before you do this, be sure to turn off the line valve on the gas supply.

Follow the thermocouple tube to the other end where the probe is mounted next to the pilot orifice. You'll see a small screw on the mounting plate. Turn this screw with pliers and when the thermocouple is loose, you can lift it right out of the fireplace. Testing a Weak Thermocouple
