It can take up to 3 hours to install smart meters for both gas and electricity. If you’re only having a smart meter for electricity installed, that will take between 1 to 1.5 hours. As part of the installation process, the engineer will need to switch off your gas and electricity supply for about 20 minutes each.

How Long Will The Engineer Take? For an engineer to fit a new gas meter, the entire installation will on average take no more than 30 minutes. Of course, there are exceptions, such as more complex meter installation rigs or larger sites.

If the gas line is has already been run up to the structure, the other poster is correct in less than 4 hours, MAX. If the line NEEDS to be run to the structure from the street, 8 hours MAX. I did this work for a couple summers while in college.

How long does the smart meter installation take? On average, it takes around 60 minutes for one smart meter setup. And if you need both gas and electricity smart meters, it takes around 90 minutes. The bookable slots are for 4 hours, so you’d need to be home for the whole time.
