What makes diesel engines work so well and last so long? It's normal for your car's gasoline engine to run for around 200,000 miles before it needs a serious overhaul, or you need a new vehicle. But diesel engines can continuously run for an impressive 1,000,000-1,500,000 miles before needing any major work.

That’s when the diesel in the fuel line gives way to the fresh batch of gasoline on the way from the tank and the engine starts to run “funny.” Of course, it all depends on how much diesel fuel remained in the tank before the gasoline was added and how new and sophisticated the diesel engine is.

What I did was soon as I realized that I had put 20+ gallons of SUPER UNLEADED into my 2000 7.3PowerStroke (Whie it was running)(40 gallon tank) @ 2:00am I turned it off, went in & bought $200 in ALL of the 1 quart oil bottles from the shelf.poured it ALL IN. pulled the fuel filter out, drained ALL the fuel out & filled it w/ motor oil.

Gasoline will certainly affect the fuel injectors, fuel pump, and fuel filter of your diesel engine. This makes up the whole fuel system of your vehicle. Without these components working properly, you will have to replace your fuel system entirely. #4 – Shock Wave Damage

This is a common misconception. Modern diesel engines do not require the amount of time to warm up as in years past. There are many advancements made to cut this warm-up time down and maintain high levels of durably. You will find that most are down to 3 minutes before you put a load on the engine. Remember, though, the diesel was meant for a load.

Here is what you should do: Approximate how much diesel was pumped into the gas tank. It’s helpful to know if you only pumped in a drop or 50% of the tank is now full with diesel fuel. Do not attempt to operate the vehicle. Minimize your risk of costly repairs by not running the vehicle.

Since diesel fuel has an octane rating of 25-30, pumping diesel fuel into a gas tank can lower the octane level needed and cause damage to the gas engine. The more diesel fuel pumped into the gas tank, the higher the level of diesel contamination.

diesel car can run on gas...for a limited period..case in point.. my girl friend filled my VW diesel with gasoline..there was enough diesel in the fuel system to restart tha car after she finished filling the tank ..and modern electronics controlled the mixture enough to quench detonation...the perfromance was dramacticlly reduced ( she picked me up after the car was fueled) ...but when it was shut off..it would not restart as all the diesel fuel had been consumed..had to call tow truck and ...
