Top best answers to the question «How do i know if my gas gauge is working»
Disconnect the wire that connects the fuel gauge to the sender unit, then turn the vehicle on. If the fuel gauge reads full, this indicates a problem with the sender unit or the in-tank mechanism. If the gauge continues to read empty, you most likely have a faulty fuel gauge that needs to be replaced.

You can also test continuity between the sending terminal at the dash, and where it connects back at the tank. If you have no continuity, there is a break in this wire somewhere. To check the fuel gauge itself, remove the instrument cluster from the dash and test it with the multimeter for resistance.

Gas Gauge Failure is less common, but still a possible issue. If the internal circuit is faulty, the gas gauge may only function in one section, such as between HALF and FULL or between EMPTY and HALF. If the internal circuits are shorted, they may peg to FULL or EMPTY. If the circuit is open, the gas gauge will likely sit at EMPTY and never move.
Remove the ground connection, clean, and re-attach. You need to visually inspect the wiring as any break or damage to the sending unit wire, or ground will cause a problem at the gauge. In most cases, to gain access to the fuel tank sending unit mount / fuel pump mounting hole, you’ll need to drop the gas tank down.
There are some simple tests you can do to see if your fuel gauge is working. Step 1 Ensure that all wiring connections (both on the back of the gauge and on the sender unit) are clean, tight, and free from dirt and corrosion.
A faulty fuel gauge sender may cause the gauge to suddenly change positions, or give an inaccurate reading. The gauge may appear to be at three quarters, and then only a few minutes later will change to half full, or vice versa the gauge may appear to be full, only to have the gauge climb higher a short while later.
Another test is to jump a wire or a screwdriver across the sending pin to the ground pin on the back of the gauge. If there is no ground pin, use a longer wire and jump the sending pin to the engine block. When you do this, the gauge should go to its lowest reading. If it does, it is working properly.
For a simplified overview of how the fuel gauge works, think of the float arm in the tank of a toilet. As the water rises, the float arm rises until it shuts off the fill valve when full. In a fuel tank, as the fuel level rises, the fuel sending unit float rises, and a variable resistor changes the resistance in the electrical current running to the gauge so it reads full.
Ideally, a gas appliance is in use. Carefully pour the hot water down the side of the gas bottle. Feel the gas bottle from the top down. The steel will feel warm until you get to the gas bottle level, where it feels cooler. The gas bottle level is at the level where the temperature changes.

- Some systems are wired so that high fuel level contacts the low-resistance section, gradually increasing resistance as fuel level drops. The system thus outputs higher voltage at high fuel level, gradually dropping voltage as fuel level drops.
- Continue to focus on the gas gauge on Ford F150 to observe if it moves smoothly from empty to full. Another test is the fuel sender test, which applies when the level is below half and protects from fuel splashing. To manipulate the float arm, you must remove the module.
